Just a little incentive to get to know us better...

Our dog - Sitka ...

Sitka came to live with us more by accident than by design. Kathy and I took a ride one day to Dallas for Sunday brunch. We made a side trip to the local Dallas SPCA location.

When we went into the shelter we had no intention to adopt a dog. It just seemed a fun thing to do. Our last dog, Lobo, died months prior, and I think in our hearts we longed for a replacement. We saw a number of very cute puppies and other dogs. But the one that stood out was a black and white Siberian Husky lying alone in a cage with the larger dogs. But the truth is we left without making a commitment.

The week went by slowly but we continued to make comments about the beautiful dog we had seen. The following Sunday rolled around and the dog was in a different kennel, but still available. We took the dog out back to the outdoor fenced run and watched as this sporty animal ran back and forth seemingly unable to get enough of the fun. Well, that cinched it! We talked it over and adopted the dog. She went home with us that afternoon.

Sitka not long after we brought he home

Sitka is a special breed Siberian Husky known as a "Wooly Siberian."  The long hair breed of Siberian is rare because of the recessive gene. This breed of Siberian is not favored by breeders because they prefer the short hair Siberian you see more commonly.

When researched you find that everywhere but the US believes this to be the purest breed Siberian.

American breeders do not treat favored dogs well and have been known to destroy less favored versions of some breeds. That is probably why we found Sitka at the SPCA.

But she is a lovely animal with a very sweet disposition and can be turned loose with very small children for play.

They do have one major drawback when it comes to owners. You cannot let a Siberian off a leash without being in a confined space. Sitka has escaped out the door of our home a few times and we have chased her for miles. We were very lucky to get her back. This tendency to run is a well-known trait of all Siberians.

Sitka earned her name because we wanted a Russian name. My wife, Kathy, named her Sitka after the town in Alaska. Sitka Alaska was the capital used by Russia when it maintained control there.
